Alexandra collaborated with prominent British painter Tom Hammick to translate his ethereal work into marquetry. Hammick's extraordinary composition and colours take on a new life when inlaid in wood. This is a limited edition of 4 sets, each piece has been signed and numbered by the artist and the designer.
The set features hand-crafted marquetry interiors and exteriors, including a range of woods such as Ziricote, Black Walnut, Rosewood and fumed Eucalyptus. The exterior marquetry wraps around the entire of the box. The artwork throughout is sealed with hand-applied lacquer.
The playing pieces are made of wood encased in gunmetal brass and measure 45mm x 11mm. The compartments are lined in calf leather. The shakers are black calf leather with inside lips to ensure fair and random rolls of the precision laser cut dice. The doubling die is embossed weighted leather.
This backgammon board has been handcrafted in the traditional tournament size, with the layout designed to be the best scale for play.
60cm x 77cm x 5cm / 23.5" x 30" x 2" when open.
About Tom Hammick
British artist Tom Hammick (b.1963) has described landscape in his work as a metaphor to explore an "imaginary and mythological dreamscape." Drawing from a wide range of sources, from Japanese woodblock prints to Northern European Romantic painting and contemporary cinema, Hammick's depictions of isolated human dwellings grounded in uncanny dream-like settings summon the uneasy atmosphere of a psychologically-charged thriller, or a dystopian suburban nightmare.
He was the winner of the V&A Prize at the International Print Biennale, Newcastle, UK in 2016, and the print Violetta and Alfredo's Escape, 2016, was acquired by the V&A. Hammick has work in many major public and corporate collections including the British Museum (Collection of Prints and Draw ings); V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum), UK; Bibliotheque Nationale de France (Collection of Prints and Drawings); Deutsche Bank; Yale Centre for British Art; and The Library of Congress, Washington DC.
Hammick works in London and is represented by Flowers Gallery.
